Build Upon Your Credit Score.
- Check Your Credit
Begin by ordering your credit reports from all three credit bureaus and reviewing each one for accuracy, then dispute any errors by contacting the credit bureau, making sure to keep all correspondence in writing.
- Pay Your Bills On Time
Use automatic payments, use online bill payment or just pay your bills as they come in.
- Pay Down Your Debt
- Reduce what you owe, rather than just moving your balances around.
- Prioritize your debts by how close the balances are to the accounts' credit limits and avoid consolidating your debts.
- Do Not Close Credit Cards or Other Revolving Accounts
- When you close an old account your credit history looks much shorter to the credit bureau and that negatively effects your score. Its particularly important to keep your oldest accounts active.
- If you do not charge something on your old accounts occasionally, your lender could decide to deactivate your account which negatively effects your score as well.
- Apply for Credit Sparingly
- New accounts can have a negative effect on your score..
- Transferring a balance from a high-limit card to a lower-limit card can also negatively impact your score.
